Southern Peru
Stopping in some of the most famous sites of Peru, and ending with a visit to Machu Picchu, this is a great introduction to Peru.
Flying first to the beautiful city of Arequipa explore the amazing buildings, including the convent of Santa Catalina founded in the 16th Century. Using this historic city as a base you then take a two day tour of the Colca Canyon, one of the deepest canyons in the world and home to the majestic condor. The views overlooking the canyon are simply superb. Taking the boat from Puno your next stop is Lake Titicaca on the border with Bolivia, which is the largest lake in South America. The clear blue water of this high altitude lake makes for some amazing photo opportunities. Staying overnight on Isla Taquile you will get the chance to interact with the local community and maybe even get an invite to dance at one of the many festivals held there.
Its then straight to Cuscu… and what a place! The buildings here are simply amazing, some dating back to Inca times you will see some classic examples of stonework that is mind boggling! How these huge boulders were put in place will leave you wondering. Cusco is a great city with plenty to see, so take your time and explore the tiny side streets.
Finally its off to the Inca Trail culminating at Machu Picchu. This four day trek will take your breath away… literally! The end result though is time to explore the Lost City of the Incas… and you will not be disappointed! Words can’t describe this place, so take our advice and go see it for yourself…
To get the most out of this tour you will need about 17 days.
Amazon Eco Adventure
This trip takes you into the Amazon and gives you a great chance to see wildlife and experience the amazing Rainforest at it’s best. A 3 hour river boat trip from Puerto Maldonado takes you to your first stop, Refugio Amazonas in the Tambopata National Reserve. This eco lodge in the heart of the local community serves as a great base to see giant river otters, as well as an Ethnobotanical Trail, and The Childrens’ Rainforest Trail specially designed for environmental education. Certainly a great place of you are travelling with the little ones.
Next is the Tambopata Research Centre located in the National Reserve and surrounded by untouched wilderness. Home to a 50 metre high macaw clay lick, so you are guaranteed to see these colourful birds in their natural habitat, with up to 15 species can be seen on any one day. Other wildlife on view are various breeds of monkey including capuchin and howler. Ongoing research projects give you an insight into the great conservation work that is being done here, and a proportion of your visitor’s fee goes towards funding this work.
For both destinations there is some great trekking through the rainforest for all levels of fitness. You will need at least five days on this tour to maximise your time and experience as much as possible, but more days can be added if required.
