Vietnam

Hanoi Old Quarter

For a country that is only a little larger than Italy, Vietnam has immense geographic and cultural diversity. Its varied climate and landscape range from four seasons of the mountainous north to year-round tropical temperatures of the lush south.

When to go?

In the North and South the wet season runs from around May to October / November, and from August to December in the Centre.  Outside of these months makes great travelling, although even during the wet season it’s completely possible.

What to do?

Vietnam’s tourist infrastructure is quite developed now, so the full range of activities are available.  Great city life, rural trekking and some amazing  UNESCO World Heritage Sites make Vietnam an interesting destination for everyone.

Plenty of beaches for relaxing on… or kite surfing on?  Remote islands with secluded coves, and a history that will keep you talking for hours, Vietnam has it all.

Money

The official currency of Vietnam is the Dong and trades at approx 17,000VND per $1US.  The US$ is also accepted in major tourist areas, but never assume it will be.

Language

Vietnamese, the official language, is a tonal language with six different tones that can be used. These change the definition, so a word could have 6 ways of pronounciation and 6 meanings. For speakers of western languages this often makes it difficult to pick, so why not download an audio Vietnamese phrasebook to get you started.
